Workshop Title:  Arts of Storytelling: Incorporating Theater  Arts  and  S.T.E.M. in the Classroom

Workshop Description: This workshop is for forward looking students, officials, educators, interpreters, and professionals as well as community members who will analyze and build upon their problem solving skills and learn how to utilize ASL interpretation of S.T.E.M topics effectively while engaging their audience. The workshop, The Arts of Storytelling : Incorporating Theater Arts and S.T.E.M. in the Classroom will use handouts, a presentation, and group work to enhance their storytelling, interpreting, and overall use of ASL. Participants will specifically utilize three common storytelling forms: ABC Story, Visual Vernacular, and ASL Poetry. In this interactive workshop, the features and techniques of these storytelling forms will be reviewed for participants to then replicate in their practice. The presenter, Fred Beam, will provide details on how to utilize each storytelling format when interpreting complex S.T.E.M topics as well as the benefits of using each.

Educational Objectives: 

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Apply literacy and theater arts techniques in sign choices and topics with a S.T.E.M focus.
2. Demonstrate appropriate facial expressions, gestures, mime skills, and body language used to present information visually through the use of ASL linguistic/storytelling technique, and Visual Vernacular.
3.Begin to apply and be able to integrate visual vernacular in their work environment (signing environment or while interpreting)

4. Interpret complex S.T.E.M concepts into ASL using one of the three storytelling forms.
