Professor Claudia E. Haupt, a nationally recognized expert on First Amendment law whose current work is situated at the intersection of free speech, health and technology, has been named faculty co-director of Northeastern Law’s Center for Health Policy and Law (CHPL). The center promotes innovative solutions to public health challenges at home and around the globe through cutting-edge research, policy analysis and interdisciplinary collaboration.

“I’m excited to have Claudia join me in leading the center,” said Professor Wendy E. Parmet, a nationally recognized expert on public health who has served as faculty director of CHPL since its launch in 2012 and will continue to serve as faculty co-director. “Her expertise in the intersections between health law and the First Amendment is unmatched and I know that she will bring energy and a passion for health law to the job.”

Haupt has published extensively on professional speech and has emerged as a prominent voice on the role of artificial intelligence in professional advice-giving. Her recent publications in the Journal of the American Medical Association have examined AI-generated medical advice, health privacy challenges, and FTC regulation of AI-generated medical disinformation. Her work has been cited by the World Health Organization in its guidance on artificial intelligence ethics and governance. She has presented her research at prestigious venues including Yale Law School, Harvard Medical School, and the University of Oxford, addressing audiences of legal scholars, medical professionals and policymakers about the implications of AI for healthcare delivery and regulation. Her second book, Professional Speech, forthcoming with Cambridge University Press, explores questions surrounding professional advice-giving, including the role of generative AI in healthcare.
