The College of Social Sciences and Humanities was proud to co-sponsor the 3rd Annual Winter Gateway Speaker Series welcoming April Ryan, an outstanding White House journalist, to Northeastern University’s campus as our featured guest speaker. The event was hosted on Friday, February 8th from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm at Blackman Auditorium. Public conversation with Ryan was moderated by NBC 10 Boston and NECN news anchor Latoyia Edwards.
Ryan has been a White House correspondent for the American Urban Radio Networks for 22 years since the Clinton administration. As a minority reporter and woman of color at the White House, Ryan was described as “a living example of how the fire of diversity can reveal and forges greatness.” She was the 2017 National Association of Black Journalists Journalist of the Year, and a 2019 Freedom of the Press Award Winner recognized by The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.
During the conversations, Ryan discussed excerpts from her latest book, Under Fire, in which she documents the chaos, confusion, and turmoil of the Trump era, and the enduring need for truth-tellers. She shared her thoughts on the state of nation with the audience followed by a special book signing session. Ryan received the inaugural Gateway Access Award from Northeastern Crossing for her outstanding contribution and advocacy for social justice, transparency, and access of information to the public. The event was well-attended with approximately 250 students, staff, faculty and community members. To see more photos of the event, please visit the Northeastern Crossing Facebook page.
