Peasant Movements of Latin American and Beyond

Latino/a Student Cultural Center
Conference Room
12:00-1:30 PM

Please join Fausto Torrez of the Nicaraguan Asociación de Trabajadores del Campo (ATC) for a discussion on peasant and worker struggle in Latin America and around the world.

The ATC is an organization of struggle created in the 1970s by youth of the Sandinista revolutionary front to organize and defend the rights of rural Nicaraguan workers and peoples. The ATC is also a founding organization of the global peasant movement La Vía Campesina that continues to be well known and respected at the international level. This movement coined the term food sovereignty, or the right of peoples to define, create, and defend their own food system.

Fausto Torrez is the Secretary of International Relations of the Asociación de Trabajadores del Campo (ATC), coordinating international activities for the Central American region of the international peasant movement La Vía Campesina. He is also part of the coordination of the IALA (Instituto Agroecologico Latinoamericano) network of peasant agroecology schools in Latin America. Fausto is one of the main ATC liaisons to the Friends of the ATC solidarity network.

This presentation is part of a 10-day Boston and New York tour organized by the Friends of the ATC solidarity network.
