Please find here the core units and programs in our department.

The Africana Studies Program focuses on the history, culture, language, political systems, and behaviors of peoples of African ancestry in the United States, the Caribbean, Africa, and throughout the African Diaspora. Our course offerings span a broad register from the early days of colonization and enslavement to contemporary issues, such as Hip Hop Culture, Jazz, and the experiences of Africans both in the continent of Africa and throughout the Diaspora.

The Asian Studies Program is an interdepartmental program that focuses on the histories, cultures, and politics of the dynamic nation-states of East, Southeast and South Asia, while also exploring their transnational interactions and their global diasporas, especially to the United States. In so doing, it encourages students to look carefully and critically at the complex ways that people in Asian countries have been involved with one another and with the rest of the world in both the past and the present.

The Latino/a, Latin American, and Caribbean Studies Program explores the historical, cultural, political, and economic foundations of and linkages between U.S. Latino society, Latin America, and the Caribbean focusing on the dynamic legacy of interaction of indigenous, African, Asian and European peoples in our hemisphere as these inform the global modern/colonial experience.

The American Sign Language Program curriculum is an intensive program of study dedicated to preparing individuals to interact in a positive and supportive manner with members of the American Deaf Community. This Program is designed to assist students in acquiring competence in American Sign Language, developing an understanding of the American Deaf Community and its culture, and applying their linguistic and cultural skills and knowledge to a particular academic area of study.

In close partnership with the World Language Center our department is also the crossroads at Northeastern for all literature and culture courses in languages other than English. We offer a BA in Spanish and minors in ASL, Arabic, Chinese, French, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.
