Associate Professor Bilge Erten’s research on the link between abortion restrictions and intimate partner violence was recently featured in a Time article, “Abortion Bans Worsen Violence in Relationships, Study Finds.” The study, co-authored with Dhaval Dave, Christine Durrance, Yang Wang & Barbara L. Wolfe was published by the National Bureau of Economic Research and finds that counties where people had to travel farther for abortion care experienced a 7–10% increase in intimate partner violence—an estimated 9,000 additional incidents in 2023 alone.
