Professor Sundaram on Supreme Court Tariff Ruling

Department Chair Asha Sundaram was featured in Northeastern Global News, offering commentary on the Supreme Court’s landmark decision to strike down President Trump’s tariffs.

Sundaram noted that while the ruling signals that checks and balances are functioning, it does not eliminate uncertainty surrounding trade policy. She emphasized that tariffs remain legitimate policy tools, but cautioned that the speed, arbitrariness, and reasoning behind the administration’s use of them had been problematic.

“It’s in a sense a signal that some checks and balances exist and that the institutions are working the way we hope they would,” Sundaram said.
