Doctoral Candidate Nicole Keller Day has received a 2016-2017 Harry Ransom Center (UT Austin) Research Fellowship in the Humanities. This Dissertation Fellowship, supported by the Creekmore and Adele Fath Charitable Foundation and The University of Texas at Austin Office of Graduate Studies, will support Nicole’s research on the eighteenth-century German astronomer, Caroline Herschel. Nicole is working on a dissertation chapter that examines how Herschel’s ability to navigate domestic and public spaces contributed to her ability to generate institutionally sanctioned astronomical fact. Nicole will be examining Herschel’s letters, biographical memoranda, surviving diaries, astronomical tables, and commonplace book, in an attempt to glean from her writing the way in which her training in feminine performance influenced her rhetorical choices and her ability to work cooperatively with her male relatives and colleagues. Nicole is completing her dissertation under the direction of Professor Nicole Aljoe.
