Ellen Noonan, Associate Teaching Professor of English, is assuming the new position of Director of the Writing Minor. This position has been created to develop and give more prominence to the department’s curriculum and programming in writing across the areas of fiction, poetry, non-fiction, writing studies, and rhetoric. Professor Noonan will be working on public programming, reaching out to bring new students to the minor, and developing a community for writers at Northeastern. Professor Noonan will also be advising the slam poetry student group, and is helping to host a performance and workshop of the Breakbeat Poets in late September. Professors Mya Poe and Gary Goshgarian will serve as faculty advisors for the Writing Minor and will be working together with Professor Noonan on further developing the Writing Minor.
Professor Noonan holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Emerson College in Boston, and an MA in English from Northeastern. She has taught writing classes—and most recently, a new class on slam poetry—in the English Department since 1993. In her new position as Director of the Writing Minor, Professor Noonan is “looking forward to bringing together faculty and students from myriad disciplines and areas of interest to do the work of all kinds of writing–scholarly, creative, hybrid, digital, collaborative, etc.–to make the English Department and NU places where writing thrives and matters.”
