Peter Hanson Writing Awards

The Department of English is pleased to announce the Peter Burton Hanson undergraduate writing awards, given for the best submissions in the three categories of Scholarly Writing, Creative Writing, and “Other.”  The awards are named in the honor and memory of Peter Burton Hanson, A&S ’91, an English major, who perished along with his wife, Sue Kim, and young daughter, Christine Lee, aboard United Airlines Flight 175, on 9/11/01.  The life that Peter practiced and the values that he espoused are remembered here through this prize and stand as testimony to one man’s humanity and victory over the terrorist violence that took so many lives.

Three prizes of $200 each for the best work created during 2018 in an undergraduate English course (excluding first-year writing courses and Advanced Writing in the Disciplines courses) will be awarded at a special presentation and reception at the end of this semester. One prize is awarded in the category of Scholarly Writing, one in the category of Creative Writing, and one for work that does not fit either category (e.g. DH projects, objects crafted as a creative response, etc). Submissions in the third “Other” category should be accompanied by sufficient information about the project to enable a judge with no prior knowledge of the field to properly evaluate it.

Only English majors, combined majors, and minors are eligible, and all English majors and minors are invited to apply.  Students may submit work in more than one category.

DEADLINE:  Work should be submitted via the submission form no later than 12:00 p.m. on Monday, February 11, 2019.

Guidelines for Submission:

Please note that failure to follow these guidelines may result in disqualification.

Judging

The works in each category are judged by a panel of faculty.  Anonymity is preserved, and toward that end, faculty members do not judge work written for their own classes.

Reception

The prize winners will present their work and receive their awards at a special reception at the end of the Spring semester.  It is important that winners make every attempt to attend the ceremony. The entire English Department, families, and members of the public are also invited to attend this festive event.
