Northeastern offers an English bachelor/Master’s degree program through the PlusOne program, which allows students to accelerate by applying graduate credits taken as an undergraduate toward both the undergraduate and graduate degrees. Any Northeastern undergraduate student may apply for the program prior to their junior year.
The student must have QPA in the major of at least 3.25 and overall of at least 3.25 for regular PlusOne admission.
A regular PlusOne applicant will be evaluated with the external applicant pool according to the English department’s existing requirements for admission to M.A. study.
A candidate for the program will register for four graduate courses in their senior year (normally two per term) and will take an additional four graduate courses (two per term) in the fifth year of study.
Candidates are required to register for ENGL 5103 Proseminar in the first semester of their senior year; this course may be used to fulfill the “Theories and Methods” requirement in the undergraduate English major. The remaining three graduate courses taken in the senior year may be used to fulfill other undergraduate major requirements, including the capstone requirement, the Period course requirements, the Comparative requirements, and the English electives requirement, as appropriate; Candidates will consult the Faculty Advisor for English Majors as well as the Graduate Program Director in arriving at a plan for completing the B.A. requirements through graduate coursework.
