Graduation Information for Masters and PhD Students

Apply to Graduate

Students must initiate the commencement process by applying to graduate via their myNortheastern account. This will place their name on the commencement list and start the commencement process. Students should apply even if there is a chance that all of their requirements will not be completed in time to graduate on a specific commencement date.

Review academic records for accuracy. Unofficial transcripts are available via myNortheastern. Continuous registration is required of all degree candidates who are submitting a thesis or dissertation, including the summer term if the thesis or dissertation is submitted in the summer.

Talk with the Graduate Program Director in your department to ensure all departmental requirements have been met, such as the required number of credit hours, cumulative average (minimum 3.000), continuous registration, language exam, comprehensive exam, thesis, dissertation, etc.

Ensure that all financial obligations have been met. Students can verify their financial status via their myNortheastern account. In order for diplomas to be released, financial obligations must be met before commencement.

Tickets and Cap and Gowns

Information regarding tickets and caps and gowns may be found on the Commencement Office website.

Important Information Regarding Theses and Dissertations

Students submitting theses or dissertations should utilize the on-line Guide to the Preparation of Theses and Dissertations. The Guide provides links to formatting tips, sample introductory pages, sample Approval Record and the deadlines. In addition, a checklist is provided to ensure you have fulfilled all of the required steps in the commencement clearance process. Any questions about the process can be directed to the Graduate Office at gradcssh@northeastern.edu, phone: 617.373.5990.

Survey of Earned Doctorates for PhD Candidates

Ph.D. Candidates must complete the Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED). The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete, is done online, and is a required component of the commencement clearance process. If students are uncomfortable with answering some of the questions, they may leave them blank. The SED should be submitted before the student brings the Northeastern Graduate Approval Record to the Graduate Office. The Graduate Office will receive electronic confirmation of students’ survey completion via SED.
