Social Impact-athon featured in The Huntington News

Almost 70 Northeastern students spent their weekend participating in the Social Impact-athon, a competition between teams developing plans to best effect change by donating to nonprofit organizations.

Almost 70 Northeastern students spent their weekend participating in the Social Impact-athon, a competition between teams developing plans to best effect change by donating to nonprofit organizations. Teams were challenged to distribute a hypothetical $50,000 between three or more Boston nonprofits centered around environmental justice. The winning team was awarded a real $50,000 to execute their plan.

The Northeastern Social Impact Lab, which teaches students how to make effective decisions when working with nonprofit organizations, put on the event. Drawing inspiration from the increasingly popular hackathon concept, in which teams gather for a few days to solve a software problem, the Social Impact Lab, or SIL, created the Social Impact-athon to teach students how to generate social change.
