LIFT is a growing movement to combat poverty and expand opportunity for all people in the United States. LIFT currently runs centers staffed by trained volunteers in Boston, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC, to serve low-income individuals and families. LIFT clients and volunteers work one-on-one to find jobs, secure safe and stable housing, make ends meet through public benefits and tax credits, and obtain quality referrals for services like childcare and healthcare. Simultaneously, the LIFT experience pushes volunteers to grapple with our country’s most challenging issues related to poverty, race, inequality, and policy. Since LIFT’s founding, over 6,000 volunteers have served more than 40,000 individuals and families.
We are a university campus chapter of Oxfam America, a non-governmental organization that finds sustainable solutions to hunger, poverty, and social injustice.
Peace through Play implements and sustains a peace-building model to counter the cycle of youth violence that pervades our communities and negatively affects the young people we serve. We create opportunities for the mutual empowerment of college students and youth by utilizing educational games as an interactive teaching method that emphasizes leadership skill-building, socio-emotional learning, and self-identity awareness. We are students empowering students to promote a culture of peace.
Strong Women Strong Girls at Northeastern University is a group of college women committed to supporting positive social change by working to create cycles of mutual empowerment for girls and women. Through mentoring relationships and after-school programs for girls 3rd-5th grade, we hope to build leadership skills and self-confidence in young girls so that they are ready to become the strong women of tomorrow. SWSG also strives to support the professional and personal growth of our college women. Our chapter is overflowing with leadership opportunities, amazing events, and great friendships.
Slow Food Northeastern University (Slow Food NU) promotes an increased awareness of the interconnection of food, the environment, and human health. Slow Food NU works to increase consciousness about the food system and its relation to social justice through deliberate and meaningful service projects, educational events, and transformative dialogue. These efforts establish and sustain lasting relationships with like-minded student groups, organizations, and initiatives throughout Northeastern’s campus and surrounding Boston neighborhoods. We value the belief that all people deserve food that is good for them, good for the people who grow it, and good for the planet. We are socially conscious learners, advocates, and eaters.
