Northeastern Students4Giving 10th Anniversary | April 19, 2018
Ten Years of “Learning to Give, Giving to Learn”
In Fall 2008, a group of 20 students taking a course called Nonprofit Management and Philanthropy faced a daunting task: defining what it means to practice experiential philanthropy (EP) education at Northeastern University. They had no previous students’ work to build on, just the challenge of investing $10,000 in local neighborhoods as effectively and ethically as possible.
These ground breakers decided they wanted EP at Northeastern to be more than an activity in a course; they wanted it to have a presence on campus that would grow over time. With funding from Fidelity Charity Gift Fund’s Students4Giving program, they were inspired to name our program Northeastern Students4Giving or NS4G. The name stuck. Ten years later, over 800 NS4Gers have participated in awarding over $150,000 to Boston nonprofit organizations. Check out our timeline to see the complex social issues NS4Gers have tried to address through their philanthropy and the high performing nonprofit organizations whose work they have supported.
As our presence has grown around campus, it has also expanded nationally and internationally, thanks to our relationship with the Buffett family’s Learning by Giving Foundation, the generosity of the Olfat and Khaled Juffali family in establishing the Global Philanthropy Initiative, and other donors who have made our work possible. We couldn’t be more grateful for their support and proud of what we have accomplished together.
