Global Spotlight Project
Each year CIAWC will feature a project that is related to international affairs and/or world cultures and is close to publication/dissemination. CIAWC will co-host/host a workshop for the project. Calls for applications will go out in April/May or September/October. A brief synopsis of the workshop and photos will be posted on the website. We envision that projects from the Global Ideas Lab might become global spotlight projects. All spotlight project leaders will meet with the research development team in CSSH and NURes at the provost level to explore ongoing research after the spotlight year.
A quantum leap is underway in outer space as a domain of human activity. The global space economy has rapidly grown to almost US$400 billion in size, and will likely more than triple by 2040 (compared to 2017). There are hundreds of actors involved, from space agencies to private companies to start-ups. These developments have involved intense transnational and international cooperation, both across public and private sectors. It is an ideal time to take stock of how these developments are impacting international relations, particularly in terms of the practice and impact of diplomacy.
On November 18th, 2021, Professor Cross convened a one-day workshop at Northeastern bringing together 12 experts in the field of space diplomacy. The result of their efforts was a special issue, Space diplomacy, in The Hague Journal of Diplomacy, with Cross as guest editor.
The Hague Journal of Diplomacy, with guest editor Professor Mai’a K. Davis Cross, will publish a special issue on Space Diplomacy. Space diplomacy is understood to be the formal and informal interactions, agreements, and deliberations that occur among actors involved in space, whether conducted by professional diplomats or non-state actors. This workshop, sponsored by Northeastern’s Humanities Center and the Brooke Chair, featured contributors to this special issue.
