Professors of Practice in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice Jack McDevitt, Director of the Institute on Race and Justice and Carlos Cuevas, Co-Director of the Violence and Justice Research Laboratory, received a $100,000 grant from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security to develop a Hate Crime Resource Center for all the Elementary, Middle and High Schools in Massachusetts. The project team also includes researchers from American University and the Anti-Defamation League of New England.
In line with the recommendations issued by Massachusetts Governor’s Task Force on Hate Crimes, this research team will develop a Resource Guide to address the concerns of Massachusetts elementary, middle, and high schools on bias incidents and hate crimes. The primary goal of this project is to provide a guide on hate crimes and incidents of bias for school personnel. The guidebook will provide information on current federal and state hate crime laws and data as well as prevention and response strategies for schools and other key stakeholders such as parents, students, and communities.
