Parashat Hashavua with the Jewish Student Union

During the spring semester, the Jewish Student Union sponsored a parashat hashavua (weekly Torah portion) study session in the Jewish Studies office with Director Lori Lefkovitz. Most sessions had 5 or 6 student attendees, some coming every time, and others as their schedules allowed. Learning Torah together and grappling with new ideas each time created a charge that energized all the participants. The Jewish Studies Program looks forward to learning with the Jewish Student Union once again next semester.

Third year student Jasper Trouerbach writes: “Our parashot study sessions at Northeastern have been incredibly rewarding for me and the rest of the Northeastern Jewish community. Individuals of all levels of learning from many different backgrounds can come and learn without feeling as though they are lacking if they don’t know anything. With Deborah and Lori being involved we dive deeply into the text not only taking away moral messages but giving context that further reinforces such passages. These sessions are more valuable than any commentary as we work and learn together by building off one another. I am excited that this will be a program on which JSU continues to work with the Jewish Studies Program and that other students from the community have reached out expressing similar feelings. I personally hope this program becomes a staple of the Jewish community at Northeastern so we can continue to grow the attendees and create meaningful dialogue.”
