Project Description
The goal of this program, the Massachusetts Access to Counsel Initiative (MACI), is to increase equitable access to legal aid by removing the financial burden of private legal representation generally borne by defendants in immigration court. MACI operates a telephone hotline through which individuals in need of legal support are vetted and, if determined to be qualified, are referred to an immigration attorney within MACI’s network of providers. MIRA, which administers MACI, is interested in assessing the extent to which the Initiative is successful at increasing the number and widening the geographical distribution of cases in immigrant court that receive free, high-quality legal support or representation. To this end, NU-PEL will be analyzing the intake, referral, and placement process to investigate MACI’s reach, efficiency, outcomes, and equity through the Commonwealth.
