  • Project Description

The 2019 flooding in the Lower Missouri River and anticipated impacts of extreme events on flood mitigation infrastructure are changing how repetitive-loss communities are thinking about the levees they live behind. Innovations such as realigning levees, levee setbacks, engineering with nature, and nature-based solutions are gaining attention among river communities and federal, state, and municipal lawmakers. This project investigates flood resiliency solutions by gathering essential community information and preferences. It does so by advancing a stakeholder-engaged social science field research approach for gathering the social, economic, and cultural data necessary to overcome planning bottlenecks in pre-flood disaster settings.
