Survey Data Validation - National Internet Observatory
Validating the survey data from NIO, and running analysis to detect fraud. The goal is to ensure that the data is high quality and representative of the broader U.S. population. Some of the steps in this regard are: developing signals of fraud/low quality respondents in the survey (such as inconsistent answers across multiple surveys, the signals of frauds automated from the survey administration, positive answers to very rare behaviors, etc.), crossing these signals with the fraud detection systems from the web tracking data, and checking how our survey data aligns with similar items of the ANES survey, fielded in a similar time frame.

Project Description
The National Internet Observatory (the NIO) invites residents of the United States to participate in a scientific study to understand the role the Internet plays in modern society. The objective of the Observatory is to shed light on people’s experiences online. The Observatory works in a two step process: (1) Collecting data from participants on their online experiences. This involves loading software on computers that sends information back to the Observatory. (2) Providing privacy-preserving access to researchers to study the Internet. The NIO welcomes participants from all backgrounds. Researchers will use these data to understand how the Internet affects individuals and society more generally.
