Newsweek, June 2024
Young voters are overwhelmingly backing President Joe Biden ahead of the 2024 election, according to a new poll. The CBS News/YouGov survey found former president Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, had a narrow lead over Biden among likely voters, 50 percent to 49 percent. However, Biden has a 23-point lead when the poll’s results are filtered to consider the views of voters aged between 18 and 29. The poll found 61 percent of likely voters under 30 said they would vote for Biden if the election were held today, while 38 percent said they would vote for Trump. About 60 percent of people aged 18 to 29 voted for Biden in the 2020 election.
“This is about the level of support Biden received in this age group in 2020 according to exit polls,” Costas Panagopoulos, a political science professor at Northeastern University, told Newsweek. “It suggests the erosion in Biden support among young voters may be overstated. Still, it’s unclear whether young voters will show up on Election Day at 2020 levels, but this poll finds young voters have not abandoned Joe Biden. In fact, Biden continues to be the top choice among the youngest voters in the electorate, by a wide margin.”
