Assistant Director of Park and Recreation

The Town of Needham is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Assistant Director of Park and Recreation.  Under the supervision of the Director of Park and Recreation, performs a variety of recreational programming and administrative duties, including planning, implementing, and supervising recreational programs for the community.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee the Department’s outdoor pool complex, including, but not limited to, managing pool water chemistry, ongoing maintenance and administration, the seasonal budget, staff recruiting, training and scheduling, and weekly payroll reports
  • Determines the recreational needs of the community, researches and evaluates new program ideas, oversees the development, organization, implementation, and supervision of programs and special events
  • Develop and enforce staff policies
  • Assists management with budget and capital development; purchasing of equipment and supplies; reporting; and health and safety compliance of programs, facilities and events.
  • Develops seasonal brochures for Town-wide distribution; organizes and coordinates registration sessions
  • Composes, prepares, and distributes publicity releases
  • Serves as Coordinator for Town trails program.


To be considered for the position, applicants must have at least:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in recreation, physical education, or related field
  • Extensive knowledge of the management of public swimming pools including, but not limited to, hiring, mechanical operations, swimming lessons, lifeguard training, etc.
  • Extensive knowledge of specialized field of Park and Recreation and leisure services
  • Four (4) to six (6) years of related park and recreation experience, including supervisory experience
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, including First Aid, CPR and AED
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Basic computer skills
  • A valid motor vehicle license

Preferred, but not required:

  • Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) Certification or the ability to acquire within the first year
  • Certified Pool Operation (CPO) Certification or the ability to acquire within the first six months
  • Lifeguard Instructor Certification or the ability to acquire within the first year
