Clean Energy and Climate Intern

The Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) seeks a motivated and experienced student with expertise in climate mitigation, clean energy, sustainability, and a strong commitment to equity. The Clean Energy and Climate Intern will advance the work of the Clean Energy Department and related climate initiatives across the Greater Boston Region.

MAPC’s Clean Energy Department provides energy and climate related technical assistance to cities and towns, as well as procures goods and services to meet the region’s clean energy and climate needs. The Department works with state and local officials, community-based organizations and local partners, and other stakeholders to develop clean energy and climate programs and advance policies. Project work areas include municipal and regional climate action and net zero planning; increasing municipal energy efficiency and mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; electrifying buildings and vehicles; and expanding the use of and access to renewable energy. A strong lens towards building greater equity and climate justice in our region guides this work.

MAPC is the Regional Planning Agency (RPA) serving the people who live and work in metropolitan Boston. Our mission is to promote smart growth and regional collaboration. MAPC’s staff includes approximately 100 full-time employees located in downtown Boston in a transit-accessible and bike-friendly office.

Interns will be working remotely, and will not be expected to come into the office regularly.  Candidates must reside in Massachusetts while they are working remotely.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to)

  • Assist the Clean Energy Department to develop equitable plans, policies, and programs to advance energy and climate goals. Including energy efficiency and renewable energy, promote climate mitigation and resilience, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the residential, commercial, and municipal sectors and across buildings, mobility, natural and working lands, energy supply, and more.
  • Research, write, prepare, and present reports, briefs, and other materials to relevant stakeholders, including municipal boards and staff.
  • Assist the organization and facilitation of energy and climate-related forums, events, and workshops.
  • Assist the organization and facilitation of stakeholder engagement including interviews, focus groups, and similar engagement activities.

Qualifications

Candidates for this position must a be currently enrolled student studying any of the following: clean energy or climate, urban planning, engineering, public policy, architecture, business, or another related field.

Successful candidates for this position will demonstrate all or most of the following:

  • Knowledge and understanding of current practices and trends in clean energy, climate mitigation, climate equity, and related planning fields.
  • Demonstrated interest in keeping up to date on emerging and innovative topics within the field.
  • Strong commitment to addressing issues of social equity, access, and climate justice.
  • Proficient written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with a wide variety of audiences.
  • Ability to work well independently, as well as collaborate within a team setting.
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative data collection, analysis and interpretation, and communication of results.
  • Multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and/or cross-cultural experience is a plus.
  • Interest or experience in climate, energy efficiency, and renewable energy data management and analysis, program models, technologies, and tools are a plus. Tools include MassEnergyInsight (MEI), Energy Star Portfolio Manager, and GHG inventory protocols and modeling.
  • A willingness to learn on the job is a must.

Only candidates currently enrolled in an academic program will be considered for this position.

Compensation and Benefits: 

This is a paid, $17 – $22 per hour, depending on qualifications, part-time (15 hours per week) internship with flexibility. To qualify as an intern, individuals must be enrolled in an academic program, provide written verification of their status, and agree to a scheduled end date upon hire. The intern will provide their own laptop or computer for purposes of completing the above work. Work will be conducted remotely.
