About This Position
Mass Audubon’s Policy and Advocacy team is working to implement strong public policies and programs that advance our Action Agenda goals and objectives: driving rapid implementation of ambitious climate action, increasing access to nature, and restoring and building the resilience of our natural and working lands.
We seek an experienced and skilled Climate Policy Analyst and researcher to join our growing team. Examples of current projects include:
- Analyzing siting and environmental impacts of clean energy resources (i.e., solar, wind),
- Researching innovative approaches to increase the contribution of nature-based solutions to climate mitigation goals,
- Supporting the drafting of legislative proposals for increasing annual funding for protection of natural lands,
- Communication to activate our growing network of grassroots advocates around policy actions for nature and climate,
- Assisting with project management for related strategy initiatives and product development.
The Climate Policy Analyst will play a vital role in our team’s efforts to develop and share new thought leadership in the form of science-based research reports and analyses, fact sheets, blogs, and other communication products. By providing high-quality research, analysis, and synthesis of data and evidence, the Climate Policy Analyst will enhance the credibility of our policy priorities and positions and help us execute and win campaigns for climate and nature across the state and region. They will support our issue-based advocacy campaigns, and communicate and broadly disseminate policy outcomes. They will also plan for and manage individual tasks and projects, and help to increase the effectiveness of our team’s policy work.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Serve as key researcher in support of our efforts to influence policies and program decisions that advance Mass Audubon’s Action Agenda goals to address climate change, improve equitable access to nature, and build resilience in Massachusetts’ natural lands.
- Manage tasks and projects, including coordinating and running team activities, developing schedules, setting up meetings, develop meeting agendas, taking notes, and planning and tracking tasks based on project progress.
- Perform analyses of proposed legislation, regulations, and programs to understand impacts on GHG emissions, natural systems, and socio-economic and equity outcomes.
- Help draft white papers, comments, summaries, and other documents, and develop infographics that summarize research and literature for a broader audience.
- Support development of content for public communications including blogs, fact sheets, presentations, earned and social media.
- Research and develop recommendations on policy design related to clean energy and climate mitigation and resilience, organizational decarbonization efforts, and resilient lands.
- Perform literature reviews and research, analyzing and synthesizing information on a variety of topics to inform and support policy advocacy within Massachusetts and New England, and at federal level.
- Prepare information to respond to inquiries from a variety of stakeholders and audiences.
- Contribute to development of strategy for state-level policy design and advocacy and take ownership of portions of that strategy. This may include, but is not limited to:
- coordinating with external stakeholders,
- meeting with regulatory staff and other decision-makers,
- supporting communication campaigns,
- representing Mass Audubon at public meetings,
- tracking legislation and regulatory proceedings, etc.
- Work with other Policy and Advocacy, communications, and other staff to maintain up-to-date information on Mass Audubon’s Intranet, website, social media, and public-facing communications
- Participate in advancing Mass Audubon DEI&J goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered as full participants in advancing organizational values and mission and addressing challenges.

- Master’s degree or equivalent experience in a field requiring research and analytic skills (e.g., public policy, economics, data science, business, law).
- Excellent research and analytical skills.
- At least 3 years’ professional experience, including experience planning and managing tasks and projects (i.e., developing schedules, budgets, task assignments, tracking deliverables, etc.)
- Strong writing and presentation skills, including for non-technical audiences.
- Ability to deliver high-quality products with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Proven organizational and time management skills; ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and tasks simultaneously. Track record of meeting deadlines.
- Ability to own your work. This means taking initiative, organizing and prioritizing tasks, and working independently to solve problems creatively, while also communicating effectively to team members and colleagues. Curiosity, resourcefulness, and persistence when obstacles are encountered.
- Experience in the area of climate and energy policy, nature-based solutions and/or natural conservation policy is desirable, especially in Massachusetts and New England context.
- Proficiency with standard office technology and software (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required. Experience with data analysis and infographics (e.g., Tableau) and project planning software (e.g., MS Planner) highly desirable.

Compensation & Benefits
This position’s base salary range is $60,000 – $67,010; actual salary will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements.

This is a full time position.
Employees must successfully complete a CORI and SORI Background Check and a Motor Vehicle Record (if applicable) is required.
