“The advanced econometric techniques I learned, particularly in modern causal inference methods, will directly strengthen my ability to apply rigorous empirical strategies in my current research on development economics and social stratification,” says Kishan. “More importantly, the international academic community I’ve built through this program will provide lifelong collaborations and intellectual exchange that will shape my academic trajectory for years to come.”

In summer 2025, PhD student Kishan Narayn traveled to Greece to attend the Summer School in Advanced Economics, co-organized by the Department of Economics at the University of Ioannina and the University of Piraeus. This selective program brings together a small cohort of PhD students and young researchers from around the world to engage in intensive study of modern theoretical and empirical economics methods. The summer school selected PhD students from across the globe, creating an intellectually vibrant environment where cutting-edge econometric methods met diverse research perspectives.

The program featured two pioneering econometricians, Prof. Jeffrey Wooldridge and Prof. Pedro Sant’Anna, who are renowned for their groundbreaking work in causal inference and econometric theory. Instead of typical conference-style presentations, participants received direct, personalized feedback on their papers and research ideas from these leading scholars.

Conducted on beautiful Spetses Island, the experience provided students with an inspiring setting for intensive academic work. They also had the opportunity to explore Athens, the historical birthplace of mathematics, logic, and the very symbols used in economic modeling today. Walking through the same spaces where foundational ideas of Western thought originated added a profound dimension to the students’ academic journey.

In addition to pursuing studies in Greece, in Summer 2025 Kishan also attended Mandar Manthan, a workshop hosted by Nalanda University—a brainstorming session that produced a highly relevant action agenda for Bihar’s tourism sector development strategy. He presented on how empowering local communities can strengthen tourism infrastructure while creating sustainable employment opportunities.
