Deena Isom to speak to students and researchers this March

Dr. Deena A. Isom, Associate Professor of African American Studies at the University of South Carolina, will discuss her new book “Gratuitous Angst in White America: A Theory of Whiteness and Crime” on Monday, March 10 at noon in Churchill Hall.

Published by Routledge in 2024, her book presents a revolutionary criminological theory that explores the racialized experiences of white people. Unlike traditional perspectives, Isom’s work turns a critical lens toward white lived experiences and the ideologies of whiteness.

The book examines America’s racial history to provide a deeper understanding of current social divides, offering insights into how these tensions are created and potentially dismantled. By challenging conventional narratives, Dr. Isom provides a nuanced approach to understanding race, crime, and social dynamics.

Students and researchers are invited to attend this compelling discussion and engage with Dr. Isom’s innovative research.
