Fall 2014 CSSH Dean's Research Development Grants Awarded

Dean Poiger is pleased to announce six new recipients of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH) Dean’s Research Development Awards. This is the third cohort of recipients since the program began in fall 2012. The grants are designed to support CSSH faculty members’ research and seed proposals for more significant support from external sources. A committee of CSSH faculty made recommendations to the Dean.

Each year, CSSH offers two funding cycles for this program. The deadline for the next cycle is February 7, 2014. For more information on the application process, please review the call for proposals.

Fall 2014 CSSH Dean’s Research Development Award Recipients

  • Arnold Arluke, Professor of Sociology, “Exploring the Social Impact of Community-based Programs to Manage Stray Dog and Cat Populations;”
  • Gia E. Barboza, Assistant Professor of African American Studies and Criminology and Criminal Justice, “The Road to Opportunities: Creating Horizontal and Vertical Pathways through Partnerships for Disconnected Youth;”
  • Timothy Scott Brown, Associate Professor of History, “Spirituality, Science, and the International Counterculture in the Long 1970s;”
  • Valentine M. Moghadam, Director of International Affairs and Middle East Studies Programs, Professor of Sociology, “Comparing the Gender Dynamics of Democratic Transitions: The Arab Spring in Comparative and International Perspective;”
  • Simon I. Singer, Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice, “Adolescence and Subsequent Parole Decision-Making;” and
  • Denis Sullivan, Professor of Political Science and International Affairs, “Who Cares for Syrian Refugees: Local and International Civil Society Efforts and Humanitarian Action in Syrian Refugee Camps in Jordan.”
