Gordon Parris

PhD Candidate in Political Science

Gordon Parris is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Political Science at Northeastern University, specializing in comparative politics and international relations. He has a strong background and interest in Sub-Saharan Africa and Central and Eastern Europe. Gordon served as a Teaching Assistant for Ioannis Livanis and Kirsten Rodine-Hardy.

Research Interests

Gordon is especially interested in both issues effecting and issues affected by democratization. Having lived for a considerable amount of time in Poland, and having grown up in South Africa, Gordon is interested in what is typically referred to as Area Studies, with a focus on broad questions of and approaches to social development. He has a background in philosophy and literature, and brings these interests to bear on theoretical and methodological questions relating to the pursuit of political science.

Prior Work

Gordon’s undergraduate theses centered on philosophical and theoretical investigations into the conceptualization of Ideology. Previous papers have consistently related to contemporary continental philosophy, with a special focus on Marxist or post-Marxist literature. Outside of the academic environment, Gordon has taught in various capacities over the course of the last ten years.  

Biography

Gordon is South African, and has been studying in countries away from home since 2008. Having graduated from the University of Cape Town with a B.A. in English Literature and Philosophy, Gordon moved over to Europe for a dual M.A. program in East European Area Studies. The first year of this M.A. was hosted by the School of Slavonic and East European Studies at UCL, and the second at the Uniwersytet Jagiełłoński in Krakow, Poland. He commenced his second M.A. at Northeastern in 2012.
