Exploring the role of women in supporting democracy: preliminary insights from Senegal, West Africa

Professors William Miles and Martha Johnson visited Senegal together on a College of Social Sciences and Humanities sponsored trip to explore the role that women play in upholding Senegal’s democracy. During their time there, they sat for multiple interviews with Senegalese professors, the former prime minister, former vice president of the National Assembly, as well as leaders of development-focused NGOs.

While many democracies around the world are facing threat from authoritarianism, Senegal’s democracy remains strong with West African women’s support groups at the forefront of this effort. Specialist Martha Johnson, associate professor of political science and affiliated faculty in WGSS emphasizes just how important this strong democratic stability is as there has been a rise in militant Islamist violence in Africa.
