Jennie C. Stephens (Director of SPPUA, Dean’s Professor of Sustainability Science & Policy, and Director of Strategic Research Collaborations) published an article in The Progressive explaining why diversity in leadership roles, specifically in legislative bodies, is so important for the battle against climate change. Stephens notes how low-income communities and people of color are disproportionately impacted by the effects of climate change, however by having more women and people of color in these spaces they can provide different perspectives on social justice. Stephens states that “diverse leadership and broad representation are essential to confront the interconnected challenges ahead.”
