Meet the Newton native who became the first transgender lawyer to argue before the Supreme Court

People in this story

This article profiles Chase Strangio, a lawyer from Newton, Massachusetts, who made history as the first openly transgender person to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court. Strangio challenged Tennessee law banning gender-affirming health care by arguing the law violated the Equal Protection rights of transgender adolescents.

Strangio discusses his experience growing up in Newton and hardships he experienced throughout his law career. He began to find his footing after working as a research assistant for Libby Adler, Professor of Law & WGSS and WGSS Acting Program. Adler said “He’s a model for what [law students] are training for, and what they can go out there and do.”

Strangio describes the most powerful part of that day as when he was welcomed outside court by a rally of trans adolescents, “It was a really beautiful rally, and gave me a lot of hope for the future.”

“I don’t think he’ll stop fighting until he’s out of breath.”
