What excites you about working at the Writing Center? I love helping people become excited about their writing. Everyone who uses the writing center has a genuine want to improve, and I love watching a client who is frustrated with some element of their writing gain confidence as we create a course of action for addressing their concerns. I also enjoy learning about a broad variety of topics that I’m not familiar with through reading papers people bring to me–I once read a paper from a graduate level architecture class, and learning concepts from that field was fascinating.

What’s been surprising to you? Something that has surprised me is how effective multi-modal forms of tutoring can be. Using the online tutoring platform was definitely a learning curve, but having both a chat function and a function to highlight writing or make edits in real time means that people who are visual learners have a visual comparison between their drafts and revisions they can hold on to while completing later drafts. It wasn’t a type of tutoring I expected to learn, but it makes sense to have it as so many students study abroad or are on global co-op.

What skills do you bring as a tutor? As a tutor, I have a strong understanding of style and structure. I had a Marketing Co-op at GrubStreet, which is a creative writing non-profit based on Boston. Because of that position, I gained a strong understanding of well-constructed pieces of writing as well as types of writing that fit the organization’s particular style, as I often copy-edit pieces for their blog. Additionally, I took a course at Northeastern called the Practice and Theory of Teaching Writing, which taught me various different tutoring styles. I’m comfortable working with academic style texts as well as creative text. If you need help with MLA formatting, screenplays/stage scripts, blog posts, or short stories, I’m your gal.

Anything else you’d like us to know? When I’m not working on writing, you can find me creating fun theater projects! I recently had a play I wrote produced through the theater group Silver Masque, and I’ll be directing a play for the Northeastern Shakespeare Society in the Spring.
