A New England serial killer? What crime experts say about rampant rumors and speculation

Law enforcement agencies throughout New England are saying there is no evidence that bodies found throughout the region are connected to any serial killer. But that hasn’t stopped the online rumor mills. Log onto Facebook and there are several groups dedicated to a “New England serial killer” who they believe is targeting middle-aged women.

“I’m new to this group and I feel like this is stupid to ask, I’m from Maine, currently live here, should I be worried about the sk running loose?” one commenter asked on the Facebook page, New England Serial Killer #NESK. “Or am I far away from it enough it won’t affect me or my fellow Mainers. I’m kinda terrified since I’m outside all the time with my ear buds in listening to music and usually with my small 13 pound dog. But like I said, should I be scared? Should I also take precautions? I don’t even want to sleep now. I’m actually so scared guys.”
