Understanding Business and Societal Resilience: Advancing Towards the SDGs
DialogueBangkok, Thailand Chiang Mai, Thailand Siem Reap, Cambodia Summer I, 2026
About the Program
The purpose of this dialogue is two-fold. First, as a group we will explore Thailand and Cambodia with an aim to better understand their rich history, beautiful landscapes, and advanced sustainability driven cities. While there, we will have the opportunity to build and master skills in cross-cultural communication and business resilience in an effort to understand the role that firms play in promoting sustainable and resilient cities. By interacting with local students, businesses, and cultural locations, we will all develop these tool kits first hand! We will see outdoor street markets and engage with local students.
Led by Professor Luis Dau, Associate Professor, International Business & Strategy. Affiliated faculty with International Affairs.
Students will receive a detailed program itinerary after acceptance into the program.
Courses
The course will allow students not only to understand and build on their cultural agility and navigate cultural differences through local site visits but it will also provide them the opportunity to see and interact with local businesses from emerging markets (which is a direct goal of both courses).
- INTB 2501 Competing to Win in Emerging Markets
Presents an introduction to emerging markets, focusing on the BRIC countries of Brazil, Russia, India, and China. Takes the perspective of U.S. companies and what they must do to be successful in emerging markets. Discusses the differences between doing business in an emerging vs. a domestic market, the opportunities and potential of an emerging market, and the risks of operating in such a market. Then looks at the world from the perspective of emerging markets and discusses steps that their governments, companies, and entrepreneurs must take to succeed in the world economy. Analyzes what emerging markets must do to raise wages and incomes, accelerate wealth creation, and reduce poverty. - INTB 3310 Cultural Aspects of International Business
Helps develop awareness of the hidden influence of culture on behavior, particularly with respect to management and management practices. With the increasing globalization of business, many managers find themselves being managed by, or collaborating with, people of different nationalities and cultures. Develops the ability to recognize, understand, and work with the cultural diversity that affects business conducted across national and cultural boundaries.
