Celebrating Black History Month
About Black History Month
February marks the celebration of Black History Month, a time to honor the profound contributions, resilience, and cultural richness of African Americans. This year’s theme, “African Americans and the Arts,” shines a spotlight on the indelible impact Black artists, creators, and visionaries have had on the cultural fabric of our nation and the world.
Black History Month traces its roots to the visionary efforts of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a pioneering historian and the first Harvard PhD graduate whose parents were enslaved. Born into a life of sharecropping, Woodson rose to become a trailblazer in the study of African American history.
In 1926, Woodson established Negro History Week during the second week of February, strategically chosen to coincide with the birthdays of two pivotal figures: Frederick Douglass (February 14) and Abraham Lincoln (February 12). This week-long observance aimed to elevate awareness and appreciation of Black history.
By 1976, Woodson’s organization, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), expanded the celebration to a month-long event, officially naming it Black History Month. Since then, every U.S. president has designated February as a time to honor and reflect on the achievements of African Americans.
