Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is taking his health crusade from the cabinet room to the kitchen. Kennedy launched The Real Food Show, an online cooking series built around affordable family meals and the “Make America Healthy Again” message. The first episode, available online, features Kennedy with celebrity chef Andrew Gruel preparing crispy salmon cakes with a salad of apple, white beans and greens. The show is set to include recipes featuring fermented foods such as kimchi and sauerkraut, staples of the gut-friendly diet Kennedy and several Trump administration figures have reportedly embraced.
“Politicians frequently resort to apolitical programming to promote themselves,” said Costas Panagopoulos, a political science professor at Northeastern University. “Partly to broaden their reach to new audiences that may not be as tuned into political news but also to make personal connections based on aspects of their identity that are not overtly political,” he added. Panagopoulos pointed to examples including Bill Clinton playing saxophone on The Arsenio Hall Show, Rudy Giuliani appearing on Seinfeld, Al Gore on 30 Rock and Hillary Clinton on SNL. “These appearances do not likely move the political needle by very much, but they help to humanize candidates and boost likability,” he explained.
