Abbie May

Criminology and Justice Policy, PhD

Abbie May is a doctoral student in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Northeastern University. Her research interests include corrections, mental health, and racial disparities. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Essex, England and a master’s degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. While completing her master’s, she contributed to the production of the first national Jail Executive Institute (JEI) in association with the American Jail Association (AJA) and the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO). She conducted research and contributed to both a mobile violence response unit and a transitional supportive housing unit for felons returning to the community in the Omaha metropolitan area. Abbie took part in an impactful service-learning research project that analyzed data to assist a local non-profit in understanding the crime rates among refugees. She conducted an undergraduate dissertation titled “A case study of a United States jail: Investigating how correctional officers understand the relationship between mental health and restrictive housing”.
