Max Willner-Giwerc
Major: Politics, Philosophy, and Economics (PPE)
Graduated in 2021
Max came into Northeastern interested in law and politics, but he wasn’t sure exactly what he wanted to do. The PPE major provided him with a strong academic base to explore different fields, and the co-op program helped him discover his passion for investigating crime. Max is currently in law school and hopes to become a special agent after graduating. He is grateful to all the mentors at Northeastern who helped him along his journey and continue to support him after graduation.
Max participated in a Dialogue of Civilization at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, where he conducted research on disarmament that was later published by E-International Relations.
The Global Justice capstone course with Professor Parekh helped him go from learning the knowledge of others to synthesizing ideas and creating new knowledge.
Max’s first co-op was in the private sector, where worked in Boston Private Bank’s compliance department to investigate financial crime.
Max was a member of Northeastern’s Student Conduct Board, which implements restorative justice to address code of conduct violations.
After realizing his passion for criminal investigations, Max did his second co-op with Homeland Security Investigations, where he assisted with white collar criminal investigations.
During his senior year, he completed a final co-op with the Special Investigations Unit at the Middlesex DA’s office, where he assisted with investigation and prosecution of white collar crime.
Max is currently a student at University of Chicago Law School. After graduation, he hopes to become a special agent to combat white collar crime.
“At Northeastern, I was encouraged to explore—to traverse academic disciplines, geographic borders, and professional fields. Only at Northeastern could I take a class about white collar crime one semester and conduct a white collar criminal investigation on co-op the next semester. Only at NU could I learn about global governance in class in the morning and meet the Director General of the UN that afternoon. Exploration is the hallmark of the Northeastern learning experience, and it made all the difference.”
