Shannon McMahon
PhD Candidate in Political Science
Shannon McMahon is a PhD student in the Department of Political Science at Northeastern University. Shannon holds both an M.A. and a B.A. from Northeastern in Political Science and International Affairs. Her research focuses on the political narratives of genocide, its denial, and memorialization. McMahon’s work concentrates on the Middle East, the Balkans, and Sub-Saharan Africa. At Northeastern, McMahon is a Doctoral Research Assistant with the Defense Industrial Base Institute (DIBI) and a past Program Assistant for the Balkans and Middle East Dialogue of Civilizations. She is a member of the International Association of Genocide Scholars, the International Network of Genocide Scholars, and the National Political Science Honor Society (Pi Sigma Alpha). She received the Northeastern University 2024 Experiential Education Award for her work. Through her research, McMahon aims to build resilience in communities affected by genocidal violence, while improving education to shape how the world perceives and reacts to mass atrocities.
Research Interest
McMahon’s research is largely centered on Genocide Studies. Specifically, her research looks at political narratives of genocide denial and its effects on memorialization and community resilience. Her work has employed a mixed methods approach and is regionally located in the Balkans, the Middle East, and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Biography
Shannon grew up on Long Island, New York. She moved to Boston five years ago to begin her undergraduate studies at Northeastern. She is fluent in Spanish and has intermediate Arabic language skills. Shannon loves to travel and has studied in Greece, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia. Her favorite cities are Sarajevo and Cairo.
