Toshiaki Yoshida

PhD Student in Political Science

Toshiaki Yoshida (Toshi) is a doctoral student in the Department of Political Science at Northeastern University, specializing in Comparative Politics and Public Policy. His research focuses on firstly, environmental politics, specifically, the interaction between government or business entity which places controversial facilities in targeted communities and civil society. He has served as a Teaching Assistant for Comparative Politics and Quantitative Techniques.

Biography

Born in Chiba and raised up in Tokyo, he appreciates international education and attended four institutions in different countries. He received his Bachelor of Commerce from Meiji University in Tokyo, Japan and MSc in Social Research from the University of Edinburgh, UK. During the undergraduate program, he spent a year at Missouri State University, USA as an exchange student, sponsored by Japanese educational public service organization.

Before joining the Ph.D. program, he learned Korean language at Seoul National University and conducted a fieldwork in Naha, Okinawa for Japanese Upper House Election Campaign in July 2019. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling foreign countries, reading essays and practicing drums.

Research Interest

His first research interests are firstly, how resourceful authorities such as government and business entities attempt to reconstruct environment to satisfy its own demand. During his bachelor and master program, he received training in comparative historical sociological analysis of capitalism which analyzes how economic and other social powers, fix municipalities and nation-state. This interest has evolved into political process of controversial facility siting. Secondly, he is interested in Japanese politics in general, such as party politics, and dissolution of parliament.
