Zeynep Balcioglu

Zeynep Balcioglu received her PhD in Political Science at Northeastern University in 2021, specializing in public policy and comparative politics. She has a strong background and research interest in migration and social policy. Zeynep is currently on the Scholars Advisory Board of the Boston Consortium on Arab Region Studies (BCARS) and organizes workshops on the Syrian Refugee Crisis in the MENA Region and the Balkans. Following a workshop Zeynep organized in March 2016 in Istanbul, in partnership with the Migration Research Center at Koc University, Zeynep co-authored a policy report with Prof. Denis Sullivan: Moving Toward Dignity: Human-Centered Approaches for Displaced Syrians in Turkey, Jordan, and Beyond.
Research Interests
Zeynep’s research focuses on refugees’ access to social and welfare services in host countries. From May to September 2016, Zeynep spent 4 months in the field in Istanbul and Izmir, conducting in-depth interviews and organizing focus groups with non-camp refugee women. Her findings from the field will be published by Routledge in 2017 in the forthcoming book Capabilities, Youth and Gender: Rethinking the Concept of Opportunities and Agency from a Human Development Perspective. Zeynep has also presented her work on refugees on several academic conferences and workshops in Istanbul, Jordan, Belgrade and Boston.
Prior Work
Before coming to Boston, Zeynep worked for several NGOs in Turkey and coordinated EU-funded projects focusing on improving the civil society infrastructure in Turkey.
