The course focuses on the varying bilingual and multilingual situations that Spain has experienced since the arrival of Romans to the Iberian Peninsula in 218 BC. Students will explore the history and present situation of multilingual Spain (e.g., arrival of muslims, language use linked to political ideologies, immigration, etc.) through fieldwork and project-based learning.
“What is Spain? From Unity to Independence” is a five-week immersive course exploring Spain’s diverse cultural and political landscape through a blend of lectures, readings, and hands-on experiences in Granada, Barcelona, and Donostia-San Sebastián. This course investigates Spain’s identity and diversity through historical, social, and cultural lenses, offering students unique opportunities to engage with these regions directly. From Islamic influence to modern independence movements, this course addresses the cultural, linguistic, and historical complexity within Spain.
