ENGW 3315 offers writing instruction for students interested in interdisciplinary study or who wish to explore multiple disciplines. Students practice and reflect on writing in professional, public, and academic genres relevant to their individual experiences and goals. In a workshop setting, offers students an opportunity to evaluate a wide variety of sources and to develop expertise in audience analysis, critical research, peer review, and revision. As part of a Dialogue, students will travel to Peru to learn about its culture and sustainability, and the intersection of the two through fieldwork: researching and writing. Students will gain cross-cultural understanding through developing interdisciplinary research projects proposing sustainable tourism development.

Designed for Dialogue of Civilizations. This program complements the intensive interdisciplinary writing course that students undertake during the Dialogue of Civilizations. Offers students an opportunity to obtain an in-depth knowledge of the contemporary culture(s) of the country of the Dialogue and how that culture differs from or is similar to contemporary American cultural values and practices. In addition to regular in-class lectures and activities, offers structured opportunities to engage in dialogue with businesspeople, scholars, educators, artists, government officials, journalists, students, senior citizens, and/or local residents about their perspectives on various topics and issues. Additionally, students will visit historically significant cultural landmarks and museums, as well as important social and political institutions.

The purpose of this program is to immerse students into the culture of Peru with a specific focus on sustainable tourism through an interdisciplinary lens. Peru is in a pivotal moment with tradition and sustainability at the forefront. With its unique topography and weather patterns that span over desert and rainforest conditions, Peru is like no other place in the world. And its popularity as a travel destination is only growing. For the second year in a row, National Geographic named Peru the best international travel destination. In the past decade, and specifically in the last few years post-pandemic, Peru’s tourism has exploded. Once seen as a quick stop to visit Machu Picchu, Peru has shifted into its new role: a global hub for art and gastronomy. While the world heritage sites and fascinating monuments have long enticed travelers, it is Peruvian culture that keeps visitors in the country exploring all that it has to offer. This program will ask students to investigate issues related to sustainable tourism from multiple angles to create research-rich writing projects centered on offering development strategies through professional writing genres such as proposals, executive summaries, grants, civil engineering plans, and/or design renderings.
