Denise Garcia

2017-18 University Excellence in Teaching Award

Professor Garcia seamlessly integrates cutting-edge research with student-focused teaching, inspiring students who clamor for a space in her classes. Her innovative curriculum engages students in transformative thinking about global governance and delves into timely topics, such as armament, artificial intelligence, and international politics. She has a profound—often life-changing—effect on students as she challenges them to collaborate on policy and legal briefs and tackle complex problems from a range of perspectives. Through decade-long leadership of her popular Dialogue of Civilizations class at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, she offers students an insider’s view of the elite, often-mysterious world of international diplomacy. “She shows students they have the power to make an impact on the world around them,” one student notes. “Her classes are shaping the leaders of tomorrow.”

Professor Garcia won the CSSH Outstanding Teaching Award – Tenured/Tenure-Track in 2016-17.
