Professor Emeritus of Sociology

Michael E. Brown is the author of books on collective behavior, the concept of “value” in Marx and post-structuralism, the historiography of communism, the concept of the social, among others. He was elected chair of the Marxist section of the ASA, received a lifetime achievement award from that section in 2019, and  was a Fulbright fellow in India.  He has been published in interdisciplinary journals such as October, Social Text, and Socialism and Democracy, and was a founder and editor of Socialism and Democracy, where he remains on the editorial staff of that journal. Professor Brown has been on more than thirty dissertation committees at the City University of New York and Northeastern University, and is currently on a dissertation committee at the City University of New York.
