Hispanic Heritage Month: Celebrating Heritage, Fostering Belonging

Each year, from September 15 to October 15, we observe Hispanic Heritage Month as a time to celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities. At Northeastern University’s College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH), this celebration reflects our deepest values: advancing knowledge, fostering a culture of belonging, and preparing students to engage with the world as empathetic global citizens.

Hispanic and Latinx communities are integral to the fabric of CSSH. Their voices shape our classrooms, research, and campus initiatives, enriching the intellectual life of the college and reminding us that scholarship cannot exist apart from the diverse experiences that inform it. Whether through groundbreaking research in migration studies, contributions to literature and cultural projects, or leadership in advocacy and community engagement, the impact of Hispanic and Latinx members of our community is profound.

This month is not only a time for recognition but also a time for reflection and commitment. CSSH acknowledges the importance of heritage as a foundation for belonging. We honor the achievements of Hispanic and Latinx students, faculty, staff, and alumni, while also affirming our responsibility to create spaces where every member of our community feels seen, valued, and supported.

Belonging is not passive; it is built through intentional practice. Hispanic Heritage Month challenges us to think critically about how institutions can move beyond symbolic gestures toward sustained inclusion. At CSSH, belonging means creating an environment where diversity informs pedagogy, scholarship, and leadership. It asks us to listen deeply, amplify marginalized voices, and recognize cultural heritage as an intellectual resource, not a side note.

The Intersection of Heritage and Scholarship

Hispanic and Latinx communities have shaped some of the most significant scholarly conversations of our time—from studies of migration and diaspora to explorations of language, identity, and global justice. CSSH faculty and students contribute to this work daily, producing research that examines the complex intersections of culture, power, and belonging. By situating these studies at the heart of our academic mission, we affirm that heritage is not only to be celebrated, but to be studied, analyzed, and elevated as a critical site of knowledge.

Leadership Rooted in Heritage

We also recognize that heritage fosters leadership. Across CSSH, Hispanic and Latinx students take on roles as researchers, advocates, and community leaders. Their stories remind us that leadership emerges not only from professional training but also from cultural resilience and lived experience. By supporting their growth, CSSH invests in a future where leadership reflects the diversity of the world it serves.

Building Bridges Beyond Campus

Our commitment to belonging extends beyond Northeastern’s walls. Hispanic Heritage Month calls us to engage with communities across Boston and beyond—listening, partnering, and co-creating spaces of equity. Through partnerships with local organizations, cultural centers, and public institutions, CSSH students and faculty learn that scholarship is most impactful when it is connected to the lives and struggles of the communities it seeks to understand.

Heritage as a Vision for the Future

Finally, Hispanic Heritage Month is an invitation to envision the future. The stories, scholarship, and resilience of Hispanic and Latinx communities illuminate what is possible when equity and belonging are prioritized. At CSSH, we see heritage not only as a reflection of the past, but as a roadmap toward a more inclusive and just academic community. It challenges us to ask: What kind of world are we preparing our students to enter, and how will they lead with empathy, respect, and purpose?
