Meta faces fight to keep business intact in landmark antitrust case

Meta is facing a historic antitrust trial threatening to break up the social media behemoth in a case that could have profound impacts on the industry and other tech companies over its purchases of Instagram and WhatsApp as other giants prepare to defend their practices against a lawsuit from the federal government. The Federal Trade Commission’s antitrust lawsuit against Meta, the owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, went to trial on Monday in a case that is expected to take weeks to argue and even longer to decide with high stakes on the line.

The lawsuit was first filed in 2020 during President Donald Trump’s first term in office and was a starting point to a more aggressive regulatory approach toward Big Tech and the several key companies that dominate the market continued under the Biden administration. It claims the company bought Instagram and WhatsApp to stomp out competition and created an illegal monopoly over social media.
