Potomac Books, an imprint of University of Nebraska Press, has just published the latest book by NULab core faculty member Meg Heckman, an Assistant Professor in Journalism, titled Political Godmother: Nackey Scripps Loeb and the Newspaper That Shook the Republican Party. Heckman’s monograph chronicles the power politics of Nackey Scripps Loeb, a conservative publisher whose leadership of New Hampshire newspaper the Union Leader, and prolific production of cartoons and editorials, fundamentally shaped the direction of the modern GOP. Notably, Heckman’s own career of journalism is tied to New Hampshire: she was an editor and reporter for the Concord Monitor for over a decade, and the former president of the New Hampshire Press Association.

Political Godmother was widely praised leading up to its release. Said author Molly McClain, “Heckman doesn’t pull any punches here. This is a portrait of a publisher whose deeply conservative political attitudes polarized voters in the 1980s and 1990s and, no doubt, will continue to either anger or inspire readers today.”

The book can be purchased from the publisher here.
