Chuncheng Liu
Assistant Professor, Communications Studies and Sociology
Chuncheng Liu is a sociologist of knowledge and technology who studies the politics of data, classification and evaluation of sociotechnical systems. His current research investigates systems that surveil and classify citizens. His forthcoming book (under contract with University of California Press) offers the first ethnography of a Chinese municipal social credit system’s design and implementation. Using mixed methods, he has also studied contact tracing applications, generative AI tools, and government data-driven systems. His scholarship appears in Big Data & Society, Information, Communication & Society, Science, Technology & Human Values, Social Science & Medicine, and other leading journals, and has been featured in The Guardian, Bloomberg, and Rest of World. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology and Science Studies from UC San Diego and completed postdoc at Microsoft Research New England.
